Food is the most basic of human needs. Food is the way we
celebrate, the way we connect, and often the way we care for one another. We
honor these experiences with our thankfulness, with our fellowship, and with
our food choices. Yet many residents of Memphis and Shelby County struggle to
obtain enough healthy food for themselves and their families. Sometimes this
means going hungry, or relying on the overabundance of cheap, unhealthy foods
laden with salt, fat, and sugar to meet daily food needs.
There is a critical relationship between social and economic
components of society and the ability to eat and access healthy, fresh food.
This year, the Memphis Empty Bowls Project is proud to benefit Memphis-area
local food pantries as well as the Double Green$ program of Grow Memphis. In
its third year of existence, Double Green$, provides a dollar-for-dollar match
up to $10 when shoppers spend their SNAP benefits at participating farmers
markets providing options and dignity to low income residents in Memphis.
In my art classes with the Bridge Homeschool group we will be creating bowls to support this charitable event. Each student will create their own design and paint it on a ceramic bowl and donate it to support the
Memphis Empty Bowls Project
Please look at the bowls from last year's event created by Bridge students. At the bottom of the post is a link to the Empty Bowls project site where you can find information purchasing tickets to the event May 18th!
Your participation in this project represents a $25 ticket
for every bowl donated. As guests leave with their empty bowls they serve as
reminders of the hunger in our community. Thank you so much for using your
compassion and creativity to make this event possible!!!
